ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: UN-HABITAT DUTY STATION: NAIROBI FUNCTIONAL TITLE SENIOR HUMAN SETTLEMENTS OFFICER (REGIONAL METROPOLITAN PLANNING) LEVEL: P5 DURATION: 8 MONTHS VACANCY CLOSING DATE: 13 AUGUST 2013
Org .Setting And Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the focal point for human settlements in the United Nations. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. This post is located in the Urban Planning and Design Branch (UPDB), Regional and Metropolitan Planning Unit of UN-Habitat at the Nairobi duty station.
Responsibilities Under the supervision of the UPDB Coordinator, the incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities: 1. Management of the Regional and Metropolitan Planning Unit and coordination of delivering for all activities within the defined delivery areas: Providing inputs to annual and biannual UPDB and Institutional work plans. 2. Develop products and services on Regional and Metropolitan Planning and National Urban Policies: Monitor and analyze external demand and needs; Conceptualize, develop and consolidate the relevant concepts and tools. 3. Resource mobilization: Promote and implement projects on National Urban Policy; Elaborate concept notes, executive proposals and project documents; Organize and provide expert inputs to workshops, seminars and meetings of experts; Backstop Regional activities; Coordinate the implementation of Governing Council Resolutions on areas articulated to the Unit and Branch Mandate. 4. Promote synergy with other UPDB units, UN-Habitat Branches and Regional Offices and UN System organisations: Coordinate articulation of the activities with other UN-Habitat and UN System complementary programmes; Consult and coordinate with relevant UN-Habitat Agenda Partners to identify needs and opportunities for integration and complementarity on future orientations to UN-Habitat ED and senior management. 5. Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Education: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics, geography, regional science, public administration, urban/regional planning, urbanism, engineering or any other related area that is relevant for sustainable urban development. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in urban/regional planning, spatial planning, urban policy, regional development, spatial economics or related field. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations. UN experience and or work experience in international programmes related to Human Settlements and Urban Development is an asset. Work experience in developing countries is an advantage.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
