POST DOC POSITION- 1 POST- AC/6/280/13- (CHSS)
The Environment for Development Initiative (EfD)
has a mission to contribute to poverty alleviation and sustainable development
through increased use of environmental economics’ capacity in policy design and
policy-making processes pertaining to management of ecosystems, natural
resources and climate change impacts. EfD has fellows and associates who work
in centres hosted by well-established academic institutions in China, Costa
Rica, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania. EfD have an important partner
organization in Resources for the Future (RFF), Washington DC, USA and
University of Gothenburg in Sweden that hosts the EfD secretariat.
EfD-Kenya is hosted by the
School of Economics, University of Nairobi. The centre conducts cutting edge
research and analysis in environment and resource economics in collaboration
with several partner organizations. The research seeks to transform the lives
of the rural and urban poor in Kenya.
The Position
The School of Economics seeks to recruit a post
doc fellow with knowledge in environmental and resource economics to join a
team of professionals working with the Environment for Development (EfD)-Kenya.
S/he should have good understanding of major fields of economics, design,
conduct and analysis of household level surveys and impact evaluation studies.
Responsibilities:
•
Contributing to the design and implementation of
surveys and experimental work to characterize EfD’s major fields of study
namely water, forestry, land, climate change etc.;
•
Contribute to the development of new research
proposals;
•
Contributing to
strengthening partnerships with research and development partners in the
region;
•
Working with and building the capacity of
students;
• Leading analysis of household livelihood studies
and impact evaluation of various interventions;
•
Publishing the results of research in high
quality peer reviewed international journals.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
•
PhD in economics or related field, (PhD must
have been attained within the last 2 years);
•
Experience in conducting household surveys in
developing countries;
• Practical experience in running econometric
analysis or other modeling techniques (e,g dynamic modeling, CGE modeling);
•
Experience in gender analysis will be considered
assets;
•
Track record of publishing in peer reviewed
publications.
Duration
Successful candidate will be offered a 1 year fellowship with the possibility of
renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

The School of
Economics seeks to recruit a data analyst to join a small team of professionals
working with the Environment for Development (EfD)-Kenya. EfD-Kenya is a centre
for cutting edge research and analysis in environment and resource economics.
It is a collaborative project between Gothenburg University of Sweden and
University of Nairobi aimed at improving policy making in Kenya through high
quality applied research in environmental and resource economics.
Job
Summary
The Research
Officer will assist in data gathering/collection, collation, management and
analysis procedures for various studies undertaken by EfD -Kenya. He/she will
also work closely with relevant government ministries for dissemination of
research outputs.
Specific
tasks and Responsibilities
1.
Data
Management: Assist in the
design of research/survey instruments, coordination, data control, data
collection and keeping/storage of instruments. Support database preparation
work in terms of data management, database keeping of all data externally
sourced from other bodies such as World Bank, IMF, KNBS, CYMMIT, ILRI etc.
2.
Knowledge
Management: will be
responsible for maintaining and updating EfD-K website. Will contribute
to the communication of EfD-Kenya work, e.g. through contribution to
preparation of EfD-Kenya knowledge products such as: presentations, working
papers, policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference
papers, posters and brochures;
3. Support
EfD-Kenya’s analytical work based on national priorities in environment and
natural resource development. Areas of research may include agriculture,
forestry, wildlife management, water resource management, environmental pollution
and other related issues;
4.
Support other
EfD-K activities- such as
organizing conferences, seminars and capacity building workshops. This
includes organizing research seminars for dissemination of research findings
and stakeholder workshops for research inputs.
Minimum qualification
a)
Masters degree in
Statistics, Applied statistics, Mathematics sciences, Environmental Economics,
Economics or related subjects from a recognized university and two years work
experience in data management and analysis, or similar duties;
b)
Thorough knowledge
of Stata and R statistical packages besides MS office. Knowledge of EPI Info
will be an added advantage;
c)
Experience in data management and performing
quality assurance procedures;
d)
Good skills in
designing/developing and managing computer relational databases demonstrated by
working experience in handling Microsoft access, SQL databases or related
programmes.
Desirable qualities
a)
Ability to develop an in-depth understanding of study
goals and its implementation;
b)
Demonstrated
ability to establish and maintain professional contacts, and to interact with
national officials and experts, other researchers, international organizations,
development partners, and other EfD-Kenya stakeholders;
c)
Ability to work
under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the quality of
deliverables;
d)
Good interpersonal skills;

High qualities of prioritization of tasks and
able to work with minimal or no supervision;
g)
A willingness to travel as and when required;
h)
Skills in web design and content management,
basic knowledge of HTML
Languages
Strong English language skills.
Terms of appointment
Successful candidate will be offered 1-year
contract, renewable on the basis of performance. Salary and benefits will be in
line with those provided by the University of Nairobi.
PROGRAMME ASSISTANT- 1 POST- AD/6/282/13- (CHSS)

program to join a team of professionals working with the Environment for
Development (EfD)-Kenya. EfD-Kenya is a centre for cutting edge research and
analysis in environment and resource economics. It is a collaborative project
between Gothenburg University of Sweden and University of Nairobi aimed at
improving policy making in Kenya through high quality applied research in
environmental and resource economics.
Job
Summary
The Program
Officer will support the coordinator in day to day activities of the EfD-K
office. He/she will also work closely with relevant staff at the School of
Economics to ensure that program activities and functions operate smoothly.
Specific
tasks and Responsibilities
• Maintain the EfD calendar: Assist the program coordinator in running the
schedule of EfD activities on an annual basis. This will also involve
preparation of annual reports, preparation for scheduled meetings, and
organizing various calendar activities.
• Logistics and travel support: Provide assistance to EfD associates in
organizing for meetings and travel logistics to various functions in and
outside Kenya. Facilitate research and field work for EfD researchers and
associates.
• Support other EfD-K activities- Provide and maintain regular updates to
associates and partners on the recent developments within the
initiative. In collaboration with other EfD-K staff, support interaction
between academics and policy makers.
