GENERAL FUNCTION:
The Regional Director manages and oversees Internews’ media development programs and projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. Internews is currently operating in: Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Liberia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania.
The Regional Director reports to the SVP of Programs and directly supervises Country Directors, Resident Journalism Advisors, the Africa Program Associate (Nairobi-based) the Africa Business Manager (Nairobi based) and the Africa Program Operations Manager (DC based) to ensure effective implementation according to budgets and program plans and overall objectives of Internews programs and grants, provides logistical support and training to the program teams as required and assists in the development of new programs as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to the following:
- Plan and coordinate all programs and projects in Sub-Saharan Africa including the design and development of new programs;
- Directly supervise, manage, coordinate, and evaluate Internews senior field staff and other employees as assigned in the region in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws;
- Manage Internews' regional office in Nairobi, Kenya which serves as a hub for Sub-Saharan-wide programs;
- Liaise with funders;
- Assist in the training of program employees to conduct and administer activities and ensure compliance with funder requirements as well as organizational policy and objectives;
- Develop, manage and/or launch programs;
- Review and monitor programs to ensure projects meet goals and objective per the approved work-plan and budget;
- Coordinate and ensure formal award actions such as changes in scope-of-work, waiver requests, quarterly and final project narrative reports
- Work with the Africa Business Manager to prepare new proposal budgets, spending plans and projections, budget modifications, formal requests for obligation increases, cost extensions, and no cost extensions;
- Lead Africa program development, including project design, proposal writing, donor relations;
- Coordinate the procurement of technology, equipment and other specialist and logistical support as needed to enable program activities/ Source consultants, partners and experts as needed to develop program elements’;
- Maintain constant contact with Internews Africa teams in Washington DC, Arcata California, London and Nairobi, as well as field staff and the SVP of Programs;
- Contribute to development initiatives through fluency in program activities;
- As part of the senior management team, attend meetings and contribute to organizational strategy and policy-making;
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 10+ years experience in international development, media, and/or nonprofit fields
- Experience as a working journalist
- Senior level experience in project management
- Previous work experience in Africa
- US government grants management experience
- Excellent critical thinking, writing, communications skills
- Strong budgeting and financial management skills
- Strong staff management and organizational skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple, ongoing obligations and assignments
- Willingness to travel frequently, often in difficult conditions is required
- Skilled in Microsoft Office and Excel
- Fluent written and spoken English and French required
- Relevant university degree
