Agricultural Economist, Kenya

Duration: 3 years contract with the possibility of renewal
Base salary starting from USD 45,000 - 55,000 per annum depending on skills and experience,with an attractive international benefits package (tax free*).
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia. www.ilri.org.
CGIAR is a global agricultural research partnership for a food-secure future. Its science is carried out by 15 research centres that are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. www.cgiar.org.
ILRI seeks to recruit a scientist to contribution to livestock research by way of agricultural economic analysis. The incumbent will be involved in liaison and development of a shared mission with the technical and scientific colleagues within ILRI and in ILRI’s partner organisations.
Responsibilities: • Contributing to design and implementation of research activities and projects; • Providing leadership in field work; • Delivering high quality research products; • Representing ILRI in dealing with partners; • Contributing to capacity building through training of PhD students and postdocs; • Publishing the results of research in high quality peer-reviewed international journals.
Requirements: • PhD, or recognised progress toward a PhD, in Agricultural Economics or related field; • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in research in agricultural economics associated with livestock; • Field-level experience of intensive and extensive livestock production systems, and a range of livestock product marketing systems, in Africa; • Excellent quantitative analytical skills and the capacity to utilise them in multi-disciplinary contexts and raise capacity of colleagues and partners in their application, interpretation and communication; • Record of successful publication and communication of high level agricultural economics research in significant journals and fora; • Demonstrated capacity to present economic analysis of technical interventions or disruptions in livestock value chains in developing countries; • Record of contributions to team effort in large research-for-development projects featuring multi-disciplinary effort and communications; • A passion for livestock as a means of pro-poor development; • Excellent capacity for implementing field work and for productive partnership in the field; • Excellent communication skills within and beyond research teams; • Record of productive membership of research teams; • A vision for ILRI’s future as an eminent research-for-development organisation; • Facility in the local languages of ILRI’s countries of emphasis will be an advantage.
Position level: Scientist Level 1.
Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal contingent upon individual performance and funding.
Terms of appointment: ILRI offers a competitive international and salary and benefits package which includes 15% Pension, Medical insurance, Life insurance and allowances for: Education, Housing, Relocation, Home leave, Annual holiday entitlement of 30 days + public holidays. *Benefits and salary are tax free subject to compliance with tax regulations of country of citizenship.
